Connections Opening Reception

I’m honored to be included in this show presented by FUSEDChicago and juried by Barbara O’Brien

FUSEDChicago, an organization of artists based in the Midwest who share an interest in encaustic, a method of making art using pigmented wax fused to a surface by heat, is pleased to announce Connections, a juried group

exhibition of works that will address contemporary relationships to nature. On view at the ARC Gallery in Chicago from November 23, 2023, through December 18, 2023, the exhibition is composed of 25 works of art by 13 artists.

Thirteen member artists will be featured in the exhibition: Carrie Baxter, Cat Crotchett, Helen Dannelly, Andrew DeWeerdt, Alicia Forestall-Boehm, Donna Kuo, Cindy Lesperance, Jane Michalski, Carol Myers, Denise Oehl, Karen Tichy, Neli Tzintzeva, and Robin VanHooser.

The exhibition was juried by nationally known art curator and critic Barbara O’Brien.

“We learn in primary school that a noun is defined as a “person, place or thing.” Artists submitting to “Connections” took the term “nature” to encompass all those meanings and more. The use of encaustic ranged from being the sole medium in a painting to being one of many components in complex mixed media works; photography, silk screened prints, recycled artworks, watercolor and raffia were each utilized in the exploration of “the connections between humans and nature.” This open-ended language, from the FUSEDChicago call for entries, resulted in artists from not only the Chicago area, but also from seven states to submit works of art for my consideration. The selection process was a challenge as there were so many remarkable works of art to

review. The more than two dozen works selected for the exhibition include the intimate and large-scale, vividly colored or resting at the edge of readability. They tap into a range of art historical and cultural traditions

including Native American motifs, Pictorialism, Pop Art, and Roman mythology. I took pleasure in the spirit and talent, the playfulness and drama, evidenced in the works selected. I hope the viewers will, as well.”

Barbara O’Brien is an independent curator and critic based in Milwaukee. She was Executive Director of the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City,

Missouri, from 2012 to 2017 after serving as chief curator and director of

exhibitions since 2009. O’Brien has a longstanding interest in and commitment to

the community of artists who incorporate encaustic into their practice. She was the Keynote Speaker at the International Encaustic Conference in both 2008 and 2013. “I am delighted,” O’Brien recently shared, “to have been invited to select works of art for “Connections,” which I anticipate will be both an opportunity for revelation and an occasion for celebration. I hope that artists will explore the encaustic

medium - and wax in all its many iterations - to address both the poetic and prosaic implications of the theme chosen by FUSEDChicago.”

O’Brien’s recent projects include serving as curator and catalog essayist for June Ahrens: Reflecting Time (2022), and Close to the Line: Mari Rantanen and Kirsten Reynolds (2019), both at the Housatonic Museum of Art in Bridgeport, CT. In 2022, O’Brien served as a curatorial consultant and catalog essayist for solo exhibitions at The Painting Center, NYC; Chris Nau: I’m Not Your Animal and Gerri Rachins: Almost Everything is Going Well.

 Exhibition Overview

The artwork in this exhibition will address contemporary relationships to nature. The connection between humans and nature is a fascinating one. Nature is both all around us and deep within us. We exist in layers that range in depth and complexity and it is often difficult yet necessary to look beyond the surface.

Enduring Earth at the Pump House Regional Arts Center

Here is advance notice of my upcoming show in LaCrosse, WI at the Pump House Regional Arts Center. I am excited to be revisiting the theme of Enduring Earth. Enduring Earth, hopes to elicit in its audience a sense of wonder and promote the will to cherish the planet.

The show includes paintings from the main themes I have been exploring in my art: Bedrock Abstraction, Tectonic Shift and Rejuvenation the Forest Series. Bedrock Abstraction incorporates photographic ink jet prints and silk screen layers referencing bedrock from along the shores of Lake Michigan in Wisconsin. Tectonic Shift continues the use of the bedrock imagery and was conceived as a reaction to the rapid changes the earth and society are experiencing.  Rejuvenation the Forest Series introduces forest imagery and color, acknowledging the need for seeking solace in nature to process our collective sense of loss during the pandemic.

All these themes share my interest in the basic structures of the earth and our connection to its history. This interest is made more poignant by my awareness of the risks to humanity if we fail to protect the planet.

The Opening Reception will be October 7th from 5-7 pm.

1 Cancer Patient

1 Cancer Patient, a hybrid exhibition, will be showing at DANK Haus, 4740 N. Western Ave., Chicago, IL 60625 from Friday, April 30 through Friday, June 25, 2021, as well as, an online presence by Virtual Curtain from Sunday, May 2 through Friday, June 25, 2021.

This exhibit was created by cancer thriver Traci Asher, Chicago photographer Warren Perlstein and curator Rosa Gallagher.  The intent of the show is to ease fears of the unknown often felt by women diagnosed with cancer.  Even though we might share a similar journey, we all walk through it

differently.  Five artists will use their unique skills to prove the theory that this disease can be fought with humor, beauty, and strength.  The works selected represent a wide variety of media –

photography, painting, ceramic, and encaustic.Exhibiting artists are: Jane Michalski, Kaitlyn Keely, Nancy Pirri, Sara Peak Convery, and Warren Perlstein with Traci Asher

Viral Collaboration

Viral Collaboration

3RD FLOOR GALLERY
Viral Collaboration
January 11 – February 19, 2021

In this exhibition, over 130 artists from 3 different continents will be exhibiting work they created in response to the global pandemic. Conceived by Chicago artists Helen Dannelly and Jeffrey Hirst, Viral Collaboration is comprised of 10” x 10” works on paper using one predominant color and incorporating a word, either visible or concealed, about how the artists feel regarding the global pandemic. The art will be displayed in tile-like fashion in groups by color. “My vision is to have a continuous spectrum of color throughout the gallery,” Dannelly stated. “I wanted to show how artists from all over the world can come together during a time of isolation and turn that individual fear and separation into something cohesive and lovely.”

Dannelly and Hirst, who have studios in the Bridgeport Art Center, launched an artists’ Facebook group, Artist Voice and Vision, at the beginning of the pandemic with the goal of reminding artists to continue to focus on their artwork despite the unnerving distractions of the pandemic and political strife. Viral Collaboration is comprised of members of Artist Voice and Vision. “This show is unusual in that no artist who wanted to participate was turned away,” Dannelly remarked. “We wanted to give artists something to look forward to beyond the chaos of the moment. Many artists told us that this exhibition gave them hope for the future. That was our goal.”

Virtual Release of a New Series of Small Works: Enduring Earth

Local artist Jane Michalski will release a series of 12 small encaustic paintings on panel sized 10 x 12 inches that imaginatively refer to the structures of stone and bedrock. Each painting will present as an abstract design meant to spark the imagination of the viewer and connect them to our planet.

There is a growing awareness of the impact of climate change and of human reliance on the earth. Covid-19 and changes in weather patterns have left us with feelings of helplessness and uncertainty. People must find ways to strengthen their emotional bonds to the earth in order to save it.

Michalski states: “I am creating a series of small works that draw on themes I explore in my art: the structures of stone and bedrock that recall the enduring earth; the foundation of human existence.  I want to spark the viewers imagination so that they can feel the presence of the past, our future, and their connection to our planet.”
