Memento
Welcome to “Memento” my small works series for 2021. Each painting was created specifically for this series and is available for purchase on the shop page of this website. The inspiration for Memento first came from a silk scarf left to me by my Aunt Elaine, my Father’s sister. I wore it until it became frayed and kept it because I loved the pattern. I have always collected objects that speak to me in some way; often natural objects that have interesting form and color, or that reminded me of places I have visited. Some of these objects were given to me by family members, aware of my artist’s predilection for collecting.. As the series developed, I discovered a deeper meaning in the objects, becoming aware that my reservoir of memories grows as I age. I sense the passage of time knowing my life is not infinite. My art becomes a way to embed my experience just as I embed images in wax:
Shedded snake skin passed on to me from my scientist sister refers to the serpent that swallows its tail, the ouroboros which signifies infinity and the cycle of birth and death.
The Circle holds symbolism of completeness. It completes a cycle and is repeated in a silk scarf from my aunt.
Image of a Fossil Coral consists of many circular chambers of an ancient life form; from Lake Michigan found by my son.
The Bark of a Birch Tree reminds us of the earth's seasons and the tree that gives its substance back to the soil when it dies.
Rust Prints created from discarded metal objects that are manmade items beyond their usefulness. The imprints are memories of what they once were.
I hope that you enjoy the series and enjoy finding the memories within the abstraction. To go directly to the shop page click HERE
