Bedrock Abstraction Works on Paper
Below are works on paper related to my Bedrock Abstraction Series. The source for some of my paintings is an outcropping of very old limestone along the shores of Lake Michigan in Wisconsin. I took photographs along the shoreline, aiming the camera down to photograph algae covered pools of water, bedrock, and the shoreline where the limestone meets the lake.
In this series I have used a photo-silkscreen technique to add reductive elements of the features of the bedrock. This combines the suggestion of the physicality of the rock with abstract forms, lines and color creating a layered space. I have a fascination with structure; the visible structure in the world around us and the structure created within a painting. I see beauty in the balance between horizontal and vertical lines, the contrasts of light and dark, complementary colors and the opposition of hard and soft edges.
